If you talk about one of the most important parts of your car, then without any doubt that's going to be the gas pedal. Without which, you cannot get too far. Now, what is gas pedal and what are its functions? If I put it simply it is the pedal that controls the amount of air entering your engine for the combustion process. But how does it work? In this post, I'll discuss gas pedal and its workings.
As I mentioned early the gas pedal controls the amount of air entering the engine. It does so by controlling the throttle valve in the throttle body. Let me give you a small overview of how the mechanism works. First, you have got the gas pedal. When you press on it, it pulls a throttle wire. The throttle wire rotates the throttle linkage, which in turn manipulates the throttle valve in the throttle body. More you press on the gas pedal, the more the throttle valve opens, and hence more air enters the engine for combustion.
Modern cars, nowadays, are connected to throttle valve via the ECU. The ECU senses positioning of the valve in the throttle body, and according to the position sends more fuel to the engine in the anticipation that more air is entering into the engine. The ECU is responsible for maintaining good air-fuel ratio for a good and efficient combustion inside the engine. This new system is called drive by wire.
